A Decade of Solving Needs

275 tons of wood from landfills

Since 2014, IC WOOD LLC has successfully diverted 275 tons of wood from landfills, repurposing massive timbers into vital habitat features. The company's top-tier industry ranking is the direct result of providing a specialized solution that the world's leading institutions — including the Columbus Zoo and Shedd Aquarium — have relied on for over a decade.

"The goal has always been to provide a real-world alternative to a plastic-focused industry. Nature provides the best materials; I simply provided the technology to make them accessible and safe for everyone."

— Bob Kilgore, Founder & Inventor

Care & Longevity

Make Your Log Last 2–4x Longer

Two simple steps — sealing the wood and keeping it off the dirt — can extend the life of your hollow log dramatically. IC WOOD strongly recommends both for any outdoor installation.

🪵

Seal the wood — it makes a dramatic difference

IC WOOD strongly recommends applying an industrial-grade wood coating or penetrating oil before first outdoor use. A quality sealer — Spar Urethane, Outlast Q8 Log Oil, or Lovitt's P-Wood Preserver — drives water out of the grain and prevents the expansion-contraction cycle that causes checking cracks to deepen over time. Reapply every one to two years. This single step can extend your log's outdoor lifespan 2–4x compared to leaving it untreated.

🪨

Keep the log up off the dirt

Direct ground contact is the fastest path to premature decay. Soil holds moisture against the wood continuously, accelerating rot from the bottom up. IC WOOD strongly recommends one of two approaches: set the log in a bed of gravel (4–6 inches deep, extending the full length of the log) so water drains freely beneath it, or install anchors that hold the log just above the ground surface. Either method dramatically reduces moisture exposure at the most vulnerable point of the log.

📅

Annual inspection keeps small issues small

Once a year, inspect the full exterior for rough spots, checking cracks, or areas where the sealer has worn through. Sand any splinters smooth, spot-treat exposed wood with your sealer, and check that the log is still sitting clear of the ground. Five minutes of annual attention prevents the kind of moisture intrusion that turns a small crack into a structural problem.

Natural Playground Crawl Logs — Engineering & Education

The Engineering Behind Natural Playground Crawl Logs

Every IC WOOD hollow log tunnel is a precision-engineered piece of reclaimed timber — not a cast replica, not a concrete composite, and not a plastic approximation. This page explains exactly why authentic timber crawl tunnels outperform synthetic alternatives across every dimension that matters to playground designers, school administrators, and parents.

Gross Motor Skills & Full-Body Movement

Crawling through a natural hollow log tunnel demands coordinated, whole-body effort — pulling, pushing, ducking, and balancing. This type of unstructured physical challenge is precisely what occupational therapists and early-childhood educators identify as the foundation of gross motor skill development. Unlike flat climbing walls or molded plastic tunnels, the slight irregularities of real timber — the gentle taper, the varied interior texture — require children to adapt their movement in real time, building proprioception and spatial awareness that structured equipment cannot replicate.

Multi-Sensory Experience Through Authentic Timber

A genuine sensory experience cannot be manufactured. The cool, smooth interior of a mechanically hollowed log carries the faint, earthy scent of real wood. The visible grain patterns, the subtle weight shift as a child moves through the tunnel, the acoustic resonance of a hollow timber — these are sensory inputs that concrete composites and indoor plastic logs are physically incapable of delivering. Research in nature-based learning consistently links authentic natural materials to deeper sensory engagement, longer play sessions, and measurable improvements in attention and self-regulation.

Open-Ended Imaginative Play in Nature-Themed Play Spaces

The defining characteristic of high-quality loose-parts and nature-themed play spaces is open-endedness — the absence of a prescribed use. A hollow log is simultaneously a tunnel, a den, a bridge, a stage, a hiding spot, and a fort. This ambiguity is not a design flaw; it is the feature. Landscape architects and playground designers who specify IC WOOD logs consistently report that children return to them session after session, inventing new narratives each time. That sustained engagement is the hallmark of imaginative play, and it is something no themed plastic structure can sustain over years of use.

Structural Integrity Through Mechanical Hollowing

IC WOOD's patented mechanical hollowing process removes the interior heartwood core in a single, controlled operation. This is not a cosmetic step — it is a structural one. By eliminating the dense, moisture-retaining core, the process dramatically reduces the differential shrinkage that causes surface checking and splitting in untreated timber. The result is a log that is structurally balanced, dimensionally stable, and free of the internal decay, fungal harborage, and insect galleries that plague naturally fallen or hand-split timber. Every log ships raw and chemical-free, ready for the marine-grade sealant or natural oil finish specified by your municipal playground safety inspector.

IC WOOD vs. Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) & Concrete-Composite Tunnel Logs

Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete — commonly marketed as GFRC — has become the dominant material in commercial playground tunnel logs over the past two decades. GFRC manufacturers cast their products in molds taken from real bark, producing a surface texture that superficially resembles peeled timber. The result is durable and low-maintenance. It is also, by definition, artificial.

IC WOOD does not replicate the appearance of wood. IC WOOD is wood — salvaged, locally sourced, patented-process hollowed, and shipped raw. Where a GFRC tunnel log delivers a sterile, concrete-composite surface that happens to look like bark, an IC WOOD crawl tunnel delivers the actual scent, grain, temperature variation, and acoustic properties of a real tree. No mold can capture that. No composite can reproduce it.

For schools, public parks, and nature-themed play environments where the stated goal is connecting children with the real outdoors, specifying a concrete facsimile is a contradiction. IC WOOD is the only commercially available natural playground crawl log that delivers authentic timber at institutional scale, with the structural certifications and documented safety record to satisfy municipal procurement requirements.

Salvaged Hazard Trees & Carbon Sequestration

Every IC WOOD log begins as a hazard tree — a standing timber identified by municipal arborists or private landowners as a structural risk. Rather than chipping these trees into mulch or sending them to landfill, IC WOOD harvests the full trunk, preserving the carbon that the tree spent decades sequestering. A single large-diameter log can represent 200 to 400 pounds of sequestered carbon that would otherwise be released through decomposition or combustion. Specifying IC WOOD is not just a playground decision — it is an environmental one, and one that qualifies for green building and sustainable procurement credits at many institutions.

Cost-Effective for Schools, Parks & Backyard Play Environments

The mechanical hollowing process that defines IC WOOD products is not just an engineering advantage — it is an economic one. By sourcing from the hazard-tree removal stream rather than virgin timber markets, IC WOOD keeps raw material costs dramatically lower than comparable hardwood products. The structural balancing effect of the hollowing process also extends service life well beyond untreated timber, reducing the total cost of ownership for school districts, municipal parks departments, and residential customers alike. A single IC WOOD crawl tunnel, properly sealed, will outlast multiple generations of plastic or composite alternatives.
