Wildly Natural. Wildly Unique.
Common Questions
Which hollow log size is right for my use?
It depends on who's using it. For backyard play, house pets, or small animals, our 28" logs are a great fit. For kids, school playgrounds, and parks, the 36" is our most popular choice — most children can crawl through comfortably. For adults, inclusive play, or large animals, the 48" gives everyone room to move. Zoos often prefer logs under 36" diameter because larger logs require more complex installation logistics in active animal habitats — though we do supply large logs to zoos with the right setup. When in doubt, call us and we'll help you pick.
Is this safe for children, schools, parks, or public spaces?
Yes. IC WOOD hollow logs are made from 100% reclaimed natural timber with no synthetic materials, adhesives, or coatings. They are non-toxic and fully biodegradable. For public installations, we recommend a shallow trench or flat-bottom cut to prevent rolling, and periodic inspections for splinters. Our logs are used in hundreds of schools, parks, and public nature play areas across the country.
Do I need to anchor or install the log?
For most residential and playground uses, no anchoring is required — a shallow trench (3–4" deep) the length of the log is all you need to keep it stable. If your log has a flat-bottom cut, it will sit level on its own. For zoo habitats or high-traffic public spaces, you may want to consult your facilities team about additional stabilization. We include full installation instructions with every order.
How much does shipping usually cost?
Shipping is calculated by weight per cubic volume via LTL freight from Taberg, NY. Interestingly, larger and heavier orders often ship at a lower per-unit cost. The easiest way to get your exact rate is to add items to your cart and proceed to checkout — your shipping total will be calculated before you pay. Liftgate service is available if you don't have a forklift on site.
How long will the hollow log last outdoors?
Untreated logs typically last 3–5 years outdoors depending on climate, drainage, and wood species. With a quality wood sealer applied every 1–2 years, that lifespan extends significantly — many of our logs are still in service after 10+ years. Hardwood species like maple and oak naturally outlast softwoods like pine. We recommend treating your log before first use and re-sealing annually.
What are the two most important things I can do to extend my log's life?
Seal the wood and keep it off the dirt. IC WOOD strongly recommends both for any outdoor installation. Applying an industrial-grade wood coating or penetrating oil before first use — and reapplying every one to two years — prevents the moisture intrusion that causes checking cracks to deepen and widen over time. Keeping the log off direct ground contact is equally important: soil holds moisture against the wood continuously, accelerating rot from the bottom up. Set the log in a bed of gravel (4–6 inches deep, full length of the log) so water drains freely beneath it, or install anchors that hold the log just above the ground surface. Together, these two steps can extend your log's outdoor lifespan 2–4x compared to leaving it untreated and sitting on bare dirt.
What information do you need from me to recommend the right log?
The more context the better. Most helpful: who or what will be using the log (kids, animals, pets, public visitors), the approximate size of the user, your installation environment (backyard, zoo habitat, school playground, park), whether you have equipment to unload freight, and your general location for shipping estimates. You can use our Blueprint Designer on the Contact page to sketch your space and send it directly to us.
Find Your Fit
These are general patterns — every project is different. Call us and we'll help you find the right fit.
Zoos & Aquariums
Typically 24"–36" diameter
Smaller logs are more common in zoo habitats — not because animals are small, but because large logs require significant logistics to install in active exhibits without disrupting daily visitors.
Schools, Parks & Playgrounds
Typically 36"–48" diameter
A 36" log is the sweet spot for most children. Parks and schools often want something that feels substantial and permanent.
Residential & Backyard
Typically 28"–48" diameter
Smaller logs work great for pets and toddlers; larger logs become the centerpiece of a backyard nature play area.
Museums & Nature Centers
Typically 36"–60" diameter
These buyers want a statement piece. Larger logs with dramatic natural character are common.
Every Log is One of a Kind
No two trees are ever the same, and neither are our logs. At IC WOOD LLC, we celebrate the raw, organic beauty of reclaimed timber. Whether it's the rugged texture of the bark, the natural curve of the trunk, or the unique grain of the wood, every piece we create is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
When you choose our Natural Play Equipment, you aren't just installing a structure — you're bringing a living piece of the forest into your environment. Wall thickness, bark texture, and interior dimensions will vary naturally from log to log.

Wall thickness varies naturally — every log is unique.
Special Care / Installation
Follow the steps below to properly install and maintain your IC WOOD hollow log. Proper care ensures decades of use in even the most demanding environments.
Receipt and Inspection
Please check for any damage caused by the shipping company upon arrival. Take photos and file a claim with the carrier immediately if damage is found.
Safety Preparation
Please call DigSafe or check for any underground utilities before digging anywhere on your site. Materials needed: Shovel and measuring tape.
IMPORTANT: Always call before you dig.
Installation Steps
Unpack: Remove the hollow log from all packaging material.
Orientation: Your log was shipped in the orientation we feel is best, but you may choose a different side if you prefer.
The Trench: If your log does not have a "flat bottom" cut, dig a shallow trench (3–4" deep) the full length of the log. This prevents the log from rolling.
Stabilize: Place the log in the trench. Shift or rotate it to ensure there is no rocking. Minor adjustments to the trench depth may be needed to ensure it is 100% stable.
ENJOY YOUR HOLLOW LOG!

Long-Term Maintenance
Sealing: Cleaning and sealing any outdoor wood is not much different than doing the same thing for a wood deck. If you fail to maintain outdoor wood it will eventually rot and crack. We recommend spraying either Linseed Oil or a similar product like Seal It Green (sealitgreen.com) onto your logs. Pump sprayers can be purchased at most home improvement retailers.
Cracking: Water entering the wood causes it to expand; as it dries, it contracts. This movement creates tiny checking cracks. Treat all wood with a water repellent every other year or so to prevent water from getting into the wood.
Splinters: Periodically check the log for rough spots. Sand them out and re-treat the area with your sealer once or twice a year.
Cleaning: Small amounts of mold or wood fungus may form on logs — this is natural and should not cause alarm. A 50/50 bleach/water mixture may be sprayed directly on logs to kill mold or fungus.
Dealing with Tree Sap
Sticky Spots: Large trees contain sap (pitch), which can be sticky. Cover sticky sap with corn starch or organic powder. This works on the log and on kids' hands!
Removal: Use Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or hand sanitizer to break down resin on clothes or surfaces. Test a small area first. Sap will eventually dry up and crystallize on its own over time.
Recommended Sizes
For most children, we recommend the 36" diameter log. For a full-size adult or inclusive play, we recommend the 48" diameter for extra wiggle room.
Lead Times
Standard lead time: Most orders depart within 3–6 weeks. Expedited orders: Approximately 2 weeks — contact us and we'll do our best to push it through.
Our logs are solid, natural specimens. A single crawl-through log can weigh anywhere from 400 lbs to over 6,000 lbs depending on species and dimensions. We use whatever large-growing species is available for your size — pine, poplar, maple, oak, and more.
Softwoods
Species like pine and poplar offer a lighter-weight profile, making them easier to maneuver during installation while still providing a rugged natural feel.
Hardwoods
Species like maple and oak are our heaviest options, offering incredible density and a "permanent" feel for high-traffic zoological or public park environments.
From lightweight discovery logs to our massive 3-ton giants — we have the best selection to fit the specific footprint and load requirements of your project.
How is shipping calculated?
Shipping costs are based on weight per cubic volume. It is actually cheaper to ship larger, heavier orders. To find out what shipping will cost, simply proceed to checkout without paying and see your shipping rate calculated with the order total.
Where do you deliver?
We deliver anywhere in the US — even to your residence, park, or zoo. Most orders ship in 14–21 days (Contiguous United States). Economy shipping is standard; expedited service is available with extra fees.
What is the size limit for hollow logs?
Generally, logs in the Northeastern US don't get much bigger than 48" in diameter — though we sometimes find larger logs, so don't hesitate to ask. Currently we are limited to around 60" in length. If you need longer logs, we recommend combining multiple logs from the same tree trunk to maintain a natural look. We are working to create distribution channels for LARGER logs — up to 96" in diameter and 96" in length.
What about log availability and species?
Logs may or may not be perfectly covered with bark — finding pristine logs can be difficult using reclaimed wood. Because we use reclaimed logs we can't guarantee exact sizes or species; we will substitute the closest possible log match. As our company grows, so will our product offerings!

Every IC WOOD hollow log ships wrapped in stretch film on a standard freight pallet — protected for LTL transit from Taberg, NY to anywhere in the US.
